The 24-hour clock is the main format used in Europe. While it is known as military time to Americans it is simply a 24-hour clock to most Europeans. In Europe, listed times therefore do not include the indicators ‘AM’ or ‘PM’. Unlike standard use of the 12-hour and 24-hour clocks, you don’t place a colon between the hour and the minutes when writing military time. This part of the military time system is a little tricky for those of us who are used to the 12-hour clock (AM/PM). Military time uses the 24-hour clock, where the hours of the day are numbered from zero to 23, starting with 00 at midnight. In everyday applications the commonly used separator between hours and minutes is a colon (e.g., computers show the time in the 24-hour system in most countries). In military applications, the separator is omitted. The next two digits (01) represent the minutes past the hour. Since military time and regular time use minutes in exactly the same way, no conversion is required. Military Time is sequential in nature and the hours go from 00 to 23. The 12 hour time format does not distinguish clearly between the end of a day and the beginning of the other. For a full breakdown of how to learn military time take a look at our military time guide. If you want to convert another military time or a standard AM/PM time back to military time you can do so using our tool to convert military time on the fly. This site has a wide array of resources to help you to learn, pronounce, read, convert, and tell military time.
